High-Voltage Battery Systems

The battery decides what your machine can do: how long it works, how much power it draws, how long it lasts. That's why we develop our high-voltage battery systems for exactly what off-highway demands – from the compact municipal vehicle and the road sweeper through construction and agricultural machinery to the high-power commercial vehicle and the special application.

The build is modular. Battery packs can be wired in series and in parallel, so voltage and capacity fit the application – not the other way round. And because our housings let us derive custom variants efficiently, the systems fit into new platforms as readily as into existing machines, with no need to rebuild the vehicle or the installation space.

Two cell chemistries, one platform

LFP or NMC – you choose the emphasis

Both battery technologies are based on modern lithium-ion technology. The difference lies in the duty profile – and that's your call:

  • NMC (nickel manganese cobalt): high energy density in a compact space. The first choice where space is tight, energy demand is high and the load profile is dynamic – for instance where long range is required.
  • LFP (lithium iron phosphate): particularly long service life, high cycle stability, an excellent safety profile. The first choice for intensively used working machines.

Voltages from 400 to 800 V and capacities from 40 to well over 400 kWh cover a wide field of power requirements and duty profiles.

Not every application needs its own battery development. That's why we rely on standardised, series-ready platforms that already cover a broad spectrum – from the municipal vehicle to the heavy-duty application. For you, that means fast integration, short development time and low project risk.

Batteries built to exchange

Keep working instead of waiting

Some jobs can't wait for a charging break. For those, we offer swappable battery systems: when a battery runs flat, it's exchanged for a charged one – the machine keeps working while the removed battery charges separately. No downtime, and no fixed charging infrastructure needed on site.

The systems run on rugged LFP technology, rated for around 3,000 charge cycles and safe operation from 0 to 50 °C. Two sizes are available: one at 130 kWh, one at 195 kWh. The clever part: both share the same footprint – the larger one simply builds taller. So you gain over half as much energy again without taking up any more floor space in the machine.

Built to fit your machine

Where a standard platform reaches its limits, we turn the task around: instead of fitting your machine to the battery, we build the battery around your machine. We manufacture our steel-housed systems to fit the installation space you have – with the capacity your application calls for, not the one that happens to be on the shelf.

The steel housing is the rugged choice for applications that take a mechanical beating. It runs without active cooling and is rated for operation up to 50 °C – a simple, hard-wearing system with little that can fail. Underneath sits the same proven cell and electronics base as in our standard platforms: custom in its fit, series-grade in its building blocks.

Safety and standards compliance

Safety comes first with us – and that's more than a statement of intent. We develop to the standards that apply to your application:

  • ECE R100 – electrical safety of high-voltage systems (for on-road use)
  • ISO 26262 – functional safety, as a process benchmark from the automotive industry
  • Application-specific standards such as ISO 13849 and ISO 25119 (mobile working machines) or EN 1175 (industrial trucks)

Reliable operation in the field is ensured by integrated protective functions, seamlessly embedded in the BMU and electronics:

  • Monitoring of temperature, voltage and insulation
  • Protection against over- and under-voltage, over-current and over-temperature

BMU and system integration

Intelligent control for efficiency and service life

The Battery Management Unit (BMU) is the central control element of every battery platform – and standard in every DEUTZ battery. It measures voltages, currents and temperatures, monitors state of charge and state of health, controls charging and discharging, and communicates with the vehicle, the drive electronics and the charging infrastructure.

The S-Box is the intelligent interface between battery and overall system. It brings together the essential safety functions, coordinates communication with charge management, and makes it possible to combine several batteries into one scalable network (multi-master approach).

Together, the BMU and S-Box are the reason our batteries run efficiently, durably and safely – from a single pack to a large network.

A detail that makes the difference: the fail-safe cooling concept

Not every battery has to be actively cooled – but where high continuous power or extreme environments are in play, thermal management decides performance and service life. For those cases we use actively cooled systems in an aluminium housing that keep the battery in its optimal temperature window – cooled in the heat, heated in the frost.

The decisive difference is in the detail: in our fail-safe cooling concept, the coolant flows only inside the aluminium housing and never comes into contact with the cells. Even if coolant escapes, it can't damage the cells. What causes failure elsewhere is ruled out here by design.

We work on off-highway machines. That includes construction and agricultural machinery, material handling vehicles, municipal vehicles, intralogistics and port fleets, and mobile power supply.

Our system kit is modular. So we electrify the compact municipal vehicle and the road sweeper just as readily as excavators, wheel loaders, cranes and applications above 500 kW. You don't get something off the shelf – you get something that fits your duty cycle.

It depends on the duty profile. LFP when long service life, high cycle stability and a particularly rugged safety profile matter – for instance on intensively used working machines or in harsh conditions. NMC when high energy density and a compact form are decisive – for instance where space is tight and long range is required. We help you assess your profile and choose the right technology.

Yes. They can be part of a DEUTZ electric drive system or run as a standalone component in an OEM's own systems. Via standardised interfaces and the BMU/S-Box architecture, they integrate into different vehicle systems – including adapting the software and safety concepts.

They're designed for professional off-highway use and developed to the standards that apply in each case – ECE R100 (high-voltage safety), ISO 26262 (functional safety), and application-specific standards such as ISO 13849, ISO 25119 and EN 1175. It depends on the system. Where high continuous power or extreme environments call for it, actively cooled and heated systems in an aluminium housing are used; the integrated thermal management holds the optimal operating temperature and secures performance and service life. Other systems – our swappable batteries, for instance – are rated for their 0 to 50 °C operating range and manage without active cooling.

On the actively cooled systems, the fail-safe cooling concept is the special part: the coolant flows only inside the aluminium housing and doesn't come into contact with the cells. That rules out cell damage from escaping coolant and delivers the highest level of operational safety.
